October Garden Tips
For The Lawn…
- If you want to sow grass seed in your shady areas it’s best to get it done by the end of the month. Try the new 5 Star Plus. It is a blend of the top performing fescue seeds and the new Thermal Blue Bluegrass. This will give your shady area a blue grass look without the expense of buying straight bluegrass. Use Fertilome New Lawn Starter when planting.
- October and November are the best times to put out pre emergent weed control for your lawn. We recommend Hy Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper containing Dimension. Dimension is the best longest lasting pre emerge on the market! An application now will prevent that pesky poa anna from coming up in the spring. If you prefer an organic solution use Corn Gluten as a pre emergent.
- Use Fertilome Winterizer to fertilize your established Bermuda or Zoysia lawns. Use Fertilome Lawn Food plus Iron on your established Fescue or Bluegrass lawns.
- Warm season turf grasses will begin to go dormant as the weather cools off. Gradually raise your mower blades as a taller grass provides more winter protection for the roots than grass cut lower.
For Your Flower Garden…
- October is the BEST time to plant Pansies. The hot weather is past and the earlier you plant them the better root establishment you get for better winter blooming! If you want your pansies to really take off consider planting 4” or landscaper flats. These larger plants establish quicker than the traditional flats. Also us Espoma Flower Tone when planting.
For Your Landscape…
- Its tree planting time! Their is a resurgence of interest in trees. Trees provide numerous landscape and environmental benefits. Fall is when we have the best selection of shade, flowering and fruit trees and it is the optimum time to plan them.
- It’s a great time to mulch! It’s a good idea to mulch your beds once a year. Mulch provides your landscape beds a fresh look, helps plants retain moisture, prevents weeds, increases winter hardiness and improves your existing soil. There are several good mulches to use and they include pinebark, hardwood, pine needles, cedar and cypress.
