I was reading, not to long ago, about how Gardener's did their gardening "back in the day". They had to know when to plant and what to plant just for food and medicine. Wow what kind of pressure is that. It was their way of survival.
Also, they didn't have different kinds of plants available to them because they only had access to the plants in their area. Thinking of that concept made me realize that we have put ourselves in a position to have to rely on chemicals because insects and fungus are devouring plants that are not indigenous to our area or our soil. Which equates to us having to spray and spray to kill.
Using the organic program enables us to grow plants that are not of this region. The organic program focuses on the soil. You know, healthy soil makes a healthy plant. And you don't have to spray to kill when your plant is healthy.
Think of your lawns, really they are to be treated like a landscape bed. Our lawns are not a natural part of our landscape. Lawns in nature are pastures and meadows. But we don't want to see that, we label that as a weed. So in order to keep a great looking lawn we need to do a lot of feeding, watering and mowing. Again the health of the soil can make your lawn look fantastic and stay that way. Chemical fertilizers don't help the soil become healthy. Chemical fertilizers also enhance the fungus problems and the need for lots of water.
When using organic fertilizers your lawn always has nutrients, the ones they really need, and you are watering less due to the deep roots the grass gets which enables the grass to pull more water and nutrients.
Being an chemical gardener at one time, I understand it may be hard to switch at once but you can work your way into a easy organic program.
